Van der Merwe Begins NCAA Tournament Run On Wednesday

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) begins his quest for the NCAA Men's Tennis singles title on Wednesday at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M.
For his first round match-up, van der Merwe will have a tough task in front of him facing the tournament's second seed in Stanford's Sam Warburg. Warburg, ranked #1 in the ITA Poll with 37-5 overall singles record has reach the finals of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American championship and the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship.
Van der Merwe, named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year for the second straight season, holds a 23-11 overall singles record entering tournament action, including a 14-7 mark in dual matches this spring. Ranked #37 in the nation by the ITA, the senior reached the semifinals of ITA National Indoors and made the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Main Draw. Van der Merwe recorded victories over five ranked opponents in spring dual meet competition.
Last season, he earned All-America honors in doubles after reaching the semifinals at the NCAA Championship and he advanced to the Round of 16 in singles. During his singles run he picked up victories over Adriano Biasella of Southern California in the first round and #35 Robert Searle of Rice in the second round, before falling to #31 Chad Harris of Vanderbilt.
