Lady Monarch Lax Falls To Richmond, 7-13

RICHMOND, Va. -- Lady Monarchs Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.) and Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va.) netted two goals apiece, but it wasn't enough as the Old Dominion University women's lacross team fell to the University of Richmond, 7-13, on Wednesday afternoon at First Market Stadium. The snaps the Lady Monarchs two-game win streak as they fall to 2-2 overall on the 2005 season.

The Spiders, who picked their first win of the year to improve to 1-4 overall, were led by junior Caroline McGuire with five goals. In addition to her scores, McGuire added one assist. Senior Kristen Habicht recorded a hat trick with three goals and four other Spiders scored in the win.

In all, five players scored goals for Old Dominion with Stanwick and Kimener leading the way. Sophomores Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.), Colleen Carver (Catonsville, Md.), and Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) each tallied goals in the loss.

The Spiders took a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the game off goals from Habicht and McGuire. Jacobs tallied the next score putting Old Dominion onto the board, but McGuire scored three consecutive over the following seven minutes as Richmond held a 5-1 lead midway through the first half.

Old Dominion scored its second goal of the half on Stanwicks' first goal of the afternoon off a feed from Jacobs, at the 15:37 point, but Richmond ended the period with three more tallies, one each from Habicht, McGuire and freshman Jenna Hubbard to take a 8-2 lead at the break.

Both teams registered five goals apiece in the second half. The Lady Monarchs attacked first with a score less than five minutes in but Richmond rattled off five unanswered goals in a two and half minute span and took its largest lead of the afternoon at 13-3. Old Dominion scored the game's final four goals while keeping the Spiders from scoring over the final 17 minutes of the half.

In net, junior Michelle Gannon (Delmar, Md.) and rookie Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) combined for eight saves, while Richmond's Jackie Swansburg posted nine saves all in the first half.

Four Lady Monarchs, junior Sarah Wosczyna (Phoenixville, Pa.), Kristen Truax (Lexington, Va.), Stanwick,and Jacobs scooped up two groundballs apiece, while Sarah Lautenbach led ODU with three draws.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Saturday, March 26th at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. and follow with a match-up against Rutgers University on Monday, March 28th.
