Field Hockey Loses Opener At Michigan State In Overtime

EAST LANSING, MI - Bridget Cooper's goal with 14 seconds left in overtime lifted the Spartans of Michigan State to a 3-2 sudden death overtime win over defending national champion Old Dominion Saturday afternoon. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead as Tara Hermann (Perkasie, Pa.) Scored on an assist from Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, Pa.). Three minutes later Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA.) scored from about 15 yards away.

In the second half Bridget Cooper scored her first goal of the match four minutes into the half, then with about 15 minutes left in regulation Maureen Halstead scored to tie the match. Cooper's game winner was on a breakaway.

MSU outshot the Lady Monarchs, 15-9. Lady Monarch goalkeeper Marybeth Freeman (Holland, Pa.) had eight saves. It was the Lady Monarchs first loss since a double overtime loss at Maryland back on Sept.3 (23 games). Old Dominion travels to Michigan, ranked fourth in the pre-season for a match Sunday at 1 p.m.
