NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University football continues to add to its 2013 schedule, as the Monarchs will play at East Carolina and host The Citadel it was announced on Friday.

The Monarchs will play at East Carolina on Saturday, Aug. 31 to open the season.  The pirates won back-to-back Conference USA championships in 2008 and 2009 and have been to three bowl games in the last five years including a 41-38 win over Boise State in the 2007 Sheraton Hawai’i Bowl.

Old Dominion will host The Citadel on Saturday, Sept. 21.

“We really appreciate Terry Holland, Athletic Director at ECU, and Larry Leckonby, Athletic Director at The Citadel, for working with ODU on this creative scheduling scenario. Obviously we were in a unique position of needing to fill 12 games for 2013 in a very short period of time. Still, we want all of our games to make sense for our student-athletes and fans while being quality football opponents,” ODU Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig said. “In scheduling East Carolina and The Citadel we have accomplished our scheduling objectives. Additionally, as we soon enter C-USA in football, ECU is arguably the benchmark in the league for football success and overall fan support among league teams. We want our fans to travel in droves to Greenville and witness what it will take for ODU to achieve that level of support and success as we continue our transition in every dimension to FBS football.”

ODU has already announced games against Atlantic Coast Conference members North Carolina and Maryland as well as FBS member Idaho on the road.  The Monarchs previously announced they will play Rhode Island at home and also have a meeting with future Conference USA member Charlotte at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.

“We are excited with playing both East Carolina and The Citadel in 2013. ECU could very well become our top rival in C-USA and The Citadel is developing into a solid program in the Southern Conference,” ODU head coach Bobby Wilder said.  “We now have four FBS and four FCS games for 2013. With each announcement, our program grows stronger for the future.”

ODU will be ineligible for conference and NCAA post-season play next season, however will add eight Conference USA opponents to the 2014 schedule, before joining C-USA as a full member in 2015.
