Srugo Tops ITA Mideast Regional Rankings

NORFOLK, Va. -- Three Old Dominion tennis Monarchs were featured in the ITA Mideast Regional rankings released on December 8th. Sophomore Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) topped the list, followed by senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at No. 4, and junior Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) at No. 22. The doubles team of Cancado and Srugo were featured at No. 13.

Surgo captured a 15-4 fall singles record and was ranked No. 18 in preseason national poll. He posted a 9-3 record against opponents featured in the ITA Preseason Rankings during the fall tournament season. During the fall, Srugo captured the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional singles title, defeating teammate Cancado, No. 43 Treat Huey of Virginia and No. 44 Peter Rodrigues of Duke along the way. At the ITA National Indoor Championships, Srugo picked up win over No. 5 Travis Helgeson of Georgia and No. 20 Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame along the way before falling to the the nation's top player in No. 1 Benjamin Kohlloeffell in the quarters. Srugo also reached the Round of 32 at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, quarterfinalist at the 39th Annaul Southern Intercollegiates, and was a finalist at the UVA Fall Classic.

Cancado played his way to a 13-6 fall singles record, which included a 5-5 mark versus preseason ranked opponents. Cancado joined Srugo as one of two Monarchs to play at the ITA Indoor National Championship and was a finalist at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championship falling to ODU teammate No. 18 Srugo. He opened the season as a quarterfinalist at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships held at the University of Georgia and went on to the semifinals at the UVA Invitational. He advanced out of the pre-qualifying bracket at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships to reach the Round of 64 of the qualifying bracket.

Igarashi earned a 5-5 fall singles record and was ranked No. 78 in the Preseason ITA Poll. He reached Round of 32 of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championships held at the University of North Carolina.

Srugo and Cancado teamed for a 11-4 fall mark and were a No. 52 preseason ranking. The duo reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiates held at the University of Georgia and were also a semifinalists at the UVA Fall Classic. Together they reached the main draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships from the qualifying bracket. They won the consolation bracket of the main draw with wins over No. 35 Marek Velicka/Federico Chavarria of Oklahoma, No. 29 David North/Eric Molnar of Georgia Tech, No. 19 Martin Stiegward/Anze Cevka of Georgia State, and No. 6 Clement Reix/Jermaine Jenkins of Clemson. Srugo and Cancado also went to the Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Championships.

The ODU men's tennis team opens up the dual meet season on January 19th against George Washington at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News.
