Van Der Merwe Reaches Round Of 16

TULSA, OK -- Old Dominion's Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) defeated Rice's Robert Searle to advance to the Round of 16 at the 2004 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Tournament on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center of the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Searle, who upset the tournament's top seed in the opening round and was ranked 35th nationally, fell to the Monarchs' number one singles player in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5. Van der Merwe, ranked 23rd nationally, upped his record to 31-10 for the year and 63-22 overall.
Van der Merwe will face Chad Harris from Vanderbilt on Friday in his Round of 32 match-up. Harris enters the third round with a 19-14 overall record and ranking 31st in the ITA Poll. He defeated Brown's Jaime Cerranti in the first round, 6-1, 6-4 and upset #13 Lester Cook from Texas A&M in the second round, 7-6, 7-5.
Van der Merwe and his doubles partner Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) also open up doubles play on Thursday afternoon against the tournament's second seeded pair of Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic from Texas A&M.
