Monarch Golfers Lead CAA Tourney By Eight Strokes

MANAKIN-SABOT, VA (April 14, 2000) -- Old Dominion's golf team fired a team score of one under par on April 14 to lead the CAA Championship by eight strokes over Richmond after 18 holes of play at Hermitage Country Club. Sophomore Michael Hospodar (Ontario, Canada) leads the tourney after shooting four under par 68 on the day.

Overall, Old Dominion placed three golfers in the top-12 as CAA Rookie of the Year freshman Geoff Harris (Reading, England) is tied for fifth after shooting even par 72, while sophomore Steve Sokol (Oxford, CT) is seventh at 73 and senior Gary Harper (Sidmouth, England) is 12th at 74. Freshman Stephen Richards (Bucks, England) is 28th after an opening round 78.

Old Dominion leads the tourney at 287, followed by Richmond at 295, James Madison at 298, Virginia Commonwealth at 300 and UNC Wilmington at 302. The Monarchs have never won the CAA Championships. Second round action continues on Saturday, with the first tee time at 7:40 am.
