Monarchs Fall Short At Hofstra, 69-65

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Rick Apodaca, starting for the first time this season after a 14-game suspension for using marijuana, registered a career-high 34 points, as Hofstra rallied for a 69-65 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion, Saturday. Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC.) scored 27 points for ODU and hauled in eight rebounds.

Apodaca, a senior, hit on 10-of-17 shots, including 5-for-10 on three-pointers, and also had four rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Pride (3-12, 2-4), who trailed 31-27 at halftime.

Ken Adeleke followed with 18 points.

Ricardo Marsh, who connected on 10-of-19 shots, tallied 27 points for the Monarchs (6-8 3-3). Kiah Thomas (Norfolk, VA.)was the only other double-figure scorer with 11 points which is a season high for him.

Hofstra, on a layup by Adeleke, took a 47-41 lead at 10:31 of the second half. Old Dominion moved on top 62-61 on a layup by Marsh at 1:08.

Apodaca's three-point goal with :37 to play opened a 6-0 run that put the Pride in command, 64-62. His two foul shots closed out the rally, 67-62 at :11.

Following a three-pointer by Troy Nance with :06 to play that cut the deficit to 67-65, Apodcaca sealed the win with a pair of free throws with :04 remaining.

Senior Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC.) scored only five points but became the 39th player in ODU history to the 1,000 career point mark. He now has 1003 career points. He went over the mark on a three-pointer with 16:55 left in the first half.

ODU led , 31-27 at halftime as Marsh led the way with 12 points, and freshman guard Isiah Hunter (Charlotte, NC.) added seven.

ODU which shot 6-22 from three-point range played most of the game without starting guard John Waller (Richmond, VA.) who injured his left shoulder (shooting arm) four minutes into the game, and never returned. Waller is listed day to day with a bruised shoulder.

ODU returns to action on Wednesday night when the Monarchs host George Mason at 7 p.m. in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
