Cancado, Igarashi Regionally Ranked

NORFOLK, Va. - The Monarchs' Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Eidy Igarashi were both featured in the Mideast fall regional rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this week. The duo was ranked 10th in the doubles poll, while Igarashi came in 17th and Cancado 22nd in the singles poll.
Together at doubles, the Monarch team of Cancado and Igarashi compiled a 7-3 fall tournament record. They won the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach and also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Mideast regional upsetting #9 David North and Marko Rajavac of Georgia Tech along the way. Nationally they participated in the qualifying doubles bracket of the Ralph Lauren All-American Championship, reaching the Round of 32.
Igarashi, a sophomore and the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, played to an 8-3 singles record during the fall tournament season. He reached the Round of 16 at the University of Virginia Invitational, upsetting #51 Brandon Wai of Yale along the way, was a Round of 64 participant in the qualifying bracket at the Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, and reached the Round of 32 at the ITA Mideast Regional.
Cancado, a junior and 2005 Second Team All-CAA selection, earned a 6-4 singles fall tournament mark and was ranked #99 in the Preseason ITA Poll. He reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Mideast Regional falling to the nation's second ranked player in Ludovic Walter of Duke. Cancado also reached the quarterfinals of the University of Virginia Invitational and the semifinals of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach. He also participated in the qualifying bracket at the Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, getting to the Round of 64.
The Old Dominion men's tennis team returns to action in January, traveling to the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, California.
