RALEIGH, N.C. -- The 20th ranked ODU Monarchs (17-6) closed out the 2008-09 regular season with its 11th win out of the last 12, after a 30-9 thumping of the NC State Wolfpack (4-15-1). ODU posted three pins and seven wins in the dual against the ACC foe, including the 32nd win of the year for #6 James Nicholson and 130th career victory for #6 Ryan Williams.
ODU jumped to a quick lead behind Nicholson, pinning NC State's Mike Moreno at 125 lbs in the second period. With the win, Nicholson improved to 32-2 on the year with both losses coming to top ten Central Michigan grappler, Scotti Sentes. Nicholson has 67 career wins in just two years of wrestling under head coach Steve Martin.
After the Wolfpack got a 3-2 decision at 133 lbs from Darrius Little over Kyle Hutter, senior Ryan Williams upped the team lead back to six with a 9-6 decision at 141 lbs. Williams posted his 130th career victory with the decision and improved to 32-3 at the end of the regular season.
NC State's nationally ranked 149- and 157-pounders would tie the score at nine with a pair of decisions, but would be the last wins of the night for the Wolfpack. Chris Brown, ranked 10th at 165 lbs started the ball rolling again for ODU, as the Monarchs won the last five matches for the final score, 30-9. Brown won, 3-0, over Quinton Godley at 165, and was followed by the second straight sudden victory win from 174-pounder Eric Decker.
At 184 lbs, rookie Joe Budi snapped a six-match losing streak with his first win since January 17. He beat Mark Jahad in a come-from-behind 6-4 decision. ODU closed out the match with a pair of pins from #16 Jesse Strawn at 197 lbs and Roy Dragon III at heavyweight.
The Monarchs capped a solid season-ending run with its eleventh win in its last twelve duals. The only setback was a five-point loss to #9 Central Michigan. The Monarchs have three wrestlers in the top ten and will learn how many bids the NCAA awarded the Colonial Athletic Association on Monday, February 23. Stay tuned to odusports.com for more updates.
ODU closes the season with 17 victories for the second straight year and will now prepare for the CAA Tournament in two weeks. ODU hosts the CAA Tournament at Oscar Smith HS on March 6-7.
