NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team pulled to within 7-6 with 18:14 remaining in the game, but the Drexel Dragons went on to score five of the game's last six goals to walk away with a 12-7 victory over the Lady Monarchs in Colonial Athletic Association action at Foreman Field on Sunday afternoon.

Five of Drexel's 12 goals came off of free position shots.
The Dragons opened the game by scoring four unanswered goals by the 18:37 mark of the first half. Following a timeout, Old Dominion finally managed to light up the scoreboard by scoring twice in less than a span of a minute. Junior Sarah Lautenbach (West Chester, Pa.) got the Lady Monarchs rolling at 18:07 followed by a free-position tally by sophomore Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) with 17:31 left in the half to cut the Dragon lead to 4-2. Dragon leading scorer Colleen Rocks registered back-to-back free position goals to bump the Drexel lead back up to four, 6-2, as time was winding down in the first stanza. However, Old Dominion's Stanwick found the back of the Dragon net with just three seconds left in the half as the Lady Monarchs entered halftime down 6-3.
Twice in the second half the Lady Monarchs were able to pull within one. Stanwick started the second half right where she left off scoring a minute and 15 seconds into the second half of play, followed by Colleen Carver (Catonsville, Md.) finding Krista Townsend (Baldwin, Md.) along the left side of the Drexel net firing away to put the Lady Monarchs within one, 7-5 with 23:38 remaining in the game. Jennifer Bonini extended the Dragon lead by two at the 18:30 mark, but a mere 16 seconds later had the Lady Monarchs back within one thanks to an unassisted tally by sophomore Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.). Trailing, 7-6, Old Dominion gave up five Dragon nets while managing just one of their own in the game's final 12:48 of action, which included three position shot goals, two by Nicole Adams and another by Kerry Kelly. The Lady Monarchs' lone goal during the span came from Old Dominion's leading scorer of the day, Stanwick, with 8:50 left in the game, stopping a three-goal run by the Dragons.
In net, Michelle Gannon (Delmar, Md.) made six saves, while back-up netminder Sarah Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) played out the game's final 4:27 and registered a save. Drexel's Kristen Urian recorded eight stops between the pipes.
