NORFOLK, Va. - Head coach Joe Pereira and the women's soccer coaching staff announced the release of the 2009 schedule today, as ODU preps to return to the post-season for the fifth time in six seasons. Old Dominion plays six of is first eight games on the road this season, including the season-opener against the ACC's North Carolina State and a trip to Arizona State to face a pair of Pac-10 teams in the Sun Devils and the University of Arizona Wildcats.
The schedule endures a big change and will be much tougher in 2009, as ODU drops a pair of teams that were not even in the Top 175 of the Final 2008 RPI for a trio all ranked among the best 75 teams at the end of the season. ODU adds Arizona, 75th, Arizona State, 65th and East Carolina University, 40th, to the schedule this year.
The season opens in Raleigh against the Wolfpack on August 21, with ODU playing the ACC foe for a third straight season. ODU will then host the return trips of a pair of newcomers to the 2008 schedule. George Washington University and High Point University will travel to Norfolk in the final weekend of August before ODU heads on the road for a vital early season road swing.
The four games on the road include a flight to "The Grand Canyon State" as a part of the Sun Devils inaugural in-season tournament. The Lady Monarchs will face host Arizona State on the night of Friday, September 4, and will match up against the University of Arizona on Sunday, September 6. It is the first ever match-up against the Wildcats and just the second all-time against ASU.
The road trip continues the following weekend as ODU travels to Liberty and East Carolina before coming home to wrap up the non-conference slate against Radford University and Loyola College (Md.) on September 18 and 20.
The Colonial Athletic Association schedule opens with the split weekend for ODU, as the team travels to Georgia State on September 24 and returns home to host UNC Wilmington on the 27th. Opening October at the ODU Soccer Stadium will be Drexel and Delaware, as the Lady Monarchs look to stay undefeated against the Dragons and earn their first home victory against the Fightin' Blue Hens.
ODU hits the road for a second four-game swing after hosting Delaware, traveling to Hofstra, Northeastern, JMU and VCU over the following two weeks. All four were in the playoff picture until the final game last season, while Hofstra and Northeastern made up the CAA Championship game. Northeastern was joined by JMU in the NCAA Tournament with the Dukes advancing to the NCAA Round of 16. The long road trip will wrap up in Richmond as ODU faces VCU, who narrowly missed the playoffs a year ago.
Wrapping up the regular season, ODU will have three home games against Towson, George Mason and William & Mary. ODU will look to close out the regular season on a high note against the Tigers and Tribe, after suffering tight one-goal setbacks to each a year ago.
After going 14-4-2 in 2008 and earning a trip to the CAA Tournament, ODU graduates nine seniors and brings in a talented group of ten rookies to take their place. The young group will pair with a veteran core, including three All-League players returning to the field in 2009.
