PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Old Dominion women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season Wednesday evening, falling 65-51 at Drexel. The Lady Monarchs will enter the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Old Dominion (20-9 14-4 CAA) will play the winner of No. 7 seed Delaware and No. 10 seed Northeastern in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals on Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m. This year's tournament will be held at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. starting March 10.
Sophomore Jackie Cook led the Lady Monarchs Wednesday, tallying 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior Tia Lewis was the only other ODU player in double figures as the forward posted 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Drexel (18-11, 10-8 CAA) had a pair of players combine for 45 points and 17 rebounds. Hollie Mershon netted a game-high 23 on 9-of-12 shooting, while Kamile Nacickaite registered a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Old Dominion trailed 32-27 at halftime, but scored the first six points of the second period to regain a one-point lead at the 17:13 mark. The lead was short-lived though as Drexel scored the next 17 points to go up for good.
ODU got the DU lead back down to 10 twice, but could never get within single digits after the Dragons lengthy spurt.
The Lady Monarchs shot just 37.5 percent in the second half and 38.5 percent for the game, while Drexel went 8-of-20 from beyond the arc and ended the contest shooting 49 percent from the field.
Old Dominion went a combined 3-0 this season against its potential quarterfinal opponents, Delaware and Northeastern. The Lady Monarchs blasted the Huskies 69-44 at home on February 10 and won at Delaware by three in mid-January and at home against the Blue Hens by nine last Sunday.
