Monarchs Open Men's Tennis Season With Rare Tripleheader
Jan. 19, 2008
Norfolk, Va. - The Old Dominion University men's tennis team will tip off its spring campaign on Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center with an unprecedented tripleheader. The Monarchs will host the College of Charleston at 11 a.m., George Washington at 5 p.m. and Norfolk State University at 8:30 p.m. ODU has played several doubleheaders over the years, but this will be the Monarchs' first tripleheader.
Through an informal survey conducted by Julie Bennett, Associate Director of Athletic Media Relations at Baylor, the Monarchs appear to be just the sixth Division I men's tennis team to play a tripleheader, joining Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Texas A&M and Tulsa.
The Monarchs posted a mark of 22-8 a year ago, finishing the season ranked 31st by the ITA after making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament where they advanced to the second round. ODU is led by a pair of seniors in Aleksandr Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi.
Seleznez was a second team All-CAA selection last season in singles and doubles play after posting a singles mark of 31-6 and a doubles mark of 16-12. He posted an 11-match winning streak at one point during the season, went 5-1 in conference matches and earned 22 straight set victories.
Igarashi earned second team All-CAA honors in doubles and third team in singles. He played to a 21-7 dual meet singles record playing mostly at the No. 4 singles position. In doubles he teamed with Seleznev to post a 15-8 dual meet mark in the spring. This fall the duo came together to win the men's A bracket at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational.
