Monarchs Hold Off Delaware at the Buzzer, 60-58
Jan. 7, 2002
Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion men's basketball team overcame a sluggish second half and held on to defeat visiting CAA foe Delaware this evening, 60-58. With the win the Monarchs improve to 8-6 overall, 2-2 CAA. The Blue Hens slip to 6-7, 2-2 CAA.
The Monarchs seemed to have a grip on things early, taking a eight point lead with just over five minutes to go in the first half. Delaware scrapped back on a Mike Ames layup and a Austen Rowland three-pointer to cut the lead to two, then took their first lead of the game on a Ames trey at 2:10. Old Dominion's John Waller (Richmond, VA) buried a three-pointer of his own with 37 seconds remaining to send the Monarchs into the locker room with a 31-29 lead.
Old Dominion went cold in the second stanza, surrendering the lead on a 10-5 Delaware run in the opening minutes. The Blue Hens stretched the lead to 47-42 on a lay up by forward Maurice Sessoms, but the Monarchs finally got things rolling and tied the game on a score from Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC) and a trey from Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) with 9:45 left.
The two teams swapped buckets down the stretch, with the Hens taking their final lead of the game at the 4:11 mark with a 56-55 advantage. Old Dominion retook the lead on four straight free throws from Marsh and Waller, then clamped down defensively in the final minutes.
Delaware managed just one basket in the final four minutes, but the visitors had one final shot at the buzzer. Guard Austen Rowland took a running jumper as time expired, but the ball fell just short and into the arms of an ODU defender, securing the win for the Monarchs.
The Blue Hens were led by Maurice Sessoms, who tallied 17 points and 7 boards.
The Monarchs shot just .327 for the game but out-rebounded Delaware 39-36. The Blue Hens shot .400 and were more accurate from the 3-point arc as well (.353 to .316).
Old Dominion will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to CAA foe George Mason.
