Lady Monarchs Open Season With Blue-White Scrimmage

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion women's basketball team, winners of the last 11 straight CAA championships and participant in the 2002 NCAA Elite Eight, will get the 2002-03 season underway with the annual Blue and White Scrimmage on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the new Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Lady Monarchs return six letterwinners among them All-CAA Second Team member and Preseason Player of the Year Okeisha Howard (Va. Beach, VA). The product of Princess Anne High School averaged 12.1 points per game and is the top returning scorer on the squad. Junior Monique Coker (Bronx, NY) is the lone returning member of the starting line-up which finished the year with a #7 USA Today/ESPN ranking and a #15 AP ranking. Coker averaged 9.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest last season.

This year's squad will be captained by senior Kim Giddens (Painter, VA) joining co-captains Coker and junior Max Nhassengo (Maputo, Mozambique).

The game will be two 16-minutes halves and be an inter-squad scrimmage with the 12 members of the Lady Monarch squad.

In attendance at this year's Blue-White Scrimmage, will be former Lady Monarch great and three-time WNBA All-Star Tichia Penicheiro.
