LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Two Monarchs placed at the 2007 Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational wrestling tournament. Ryan Williams placed sixth at 141-lbs and Kaylen Baxter notched an 8th place effort at 149-lbs. The five remaining Monarchs at the tournament faced stiff competition on the second day, continuing to add crucial experience for a postseason run later in the season.

Old Dominion was led by 17th ranked Ryan Williams (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) at 141-lbs. He went 4-3 at the tournament with one of his losses coming in overtime to the number three ranked grappler in the nation, Charles Griffin (Hofstra). On day two he had to face Griffin, the number three ranked grappler, Jeff Jaggers (Ohio State), ranked number five in the nation, and finally Kyle Ruschell (Wisconsin), the 11th ranked grappler in the nation. He lost by just two points in the fifth place match with Ruschell. It is Williams third placewinning event in three tries this season.

Williams effort was matched by redshirt sophomore Kaylen Baxter (Fairbank, Alaska), who finished 8th at 149-lbs for ODU. Baxter went 2-2 in his four bouts on the second day and he has also placed in all three tournaments for ODU this season. Baxter toppled nationally ranked David Jauregei (West Virginia) in a 4-3 decision in the wrestleback, pitting him against the number eight wrestler at 149 lbs from Nebraska Jordan Burroughs. Burroughs defeated Baxter and the Monarch was unable to bounceback in the 7th place bout against Boise State's Adam Hall. Still, Baxter led the team in wins at the tourney with six.

Three other Monarchs had a chance at placing on Saturday. At 133 lbs, Kyle Hutter went 1-1 on the second day, with a 6-5 decision over Michigan's Chris Diehl. His loss came to #16 Joe Baker (Navy) in a tight 5-3 decision, ending the sophomores hopes at placing.

Chris Brown (165) hit his first speedbump of the season after cruising through the first three weekends. He looked ready to stand on the podium again this weekend after day one, but ran into #9 Stephen Dwyer (Nebraska), losing to the Husker by decision and then dropped an overtime bout to Missouri Valley's Chris Jones to end his tournament.

Jesse Strawn (184) rounded out the scoring for ODU on the second day. Matt Casperson (Boise State) won by default in the bout.

ODU finished with 43 team points in the tourney, finishing among the top 20 teams in the 50-team field. ODU was also in action at the Penn State Open on Saturday. The team will take a breather for exams and return to action on the 29-30 of December for the Southern Scuffle Tournament.
