ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3/5 Connecticut Huskies won their fifth straight and improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season as they handed No. 9/13 Old Dominion a 3-2 loss in a neutral site contest on the campus of the University of Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 1-4 on the season.
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest. UConn's Katie Semanoff scored the game's first goal nearly seven minutes in on a scramble following a penalty corner attempt. The Lady Monarchs went down by two goals almost five minutes later on Lizzy Peijs tally on another UConn penalty corner attempt.
Old Dominion managed to cut the deficit to one before the half. CAA Player of the Week Titia Beek (Heiloo, Holland) got the Lady Monarchs onto the scoreboard shortly before halftime on an unassisted tally off a shot from the top left of the circle.
The Lady Monarchs tied the game at 2-2 with just over 17 minutes left in the contest. This time it was Old Dominion capitalizing on a penalty corner attempt. Senior Jo Ann van Aswegen (Bloemfountien, South Africa) inserted the ball to Beek for the stick stop. Beek then passed the ball to the far post to sophomore Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) for the tie.
However, two minutes later, UConn managed to score what would be the game-winner. Peijs recorded her second goal on the afternoon by carrying the ball into the circle and firing off a shot into the ODU cage from the right side of the field.
Old Dominion was outshot 20-4 and Connecticut held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Lady Monarch goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made 12 stops in the cage for Old Dominion, while UConn's Andrea Mainiero recorded one save.
The Lady Monarchs return to action next week traveling to No. 2/2 North Carolina on Friday, September 14th and No. 8/9 Duke on Sunday, September 16th.
