NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University wrestling has signed five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, ODU head coach Steve Martin announced.

Pete Baldwin, Brandon Choate, Robert F. Deutsch Jr., Chris Mecate, and Taylor Moeder have all signed NLI's and will join the wrestling Monarchs next fall.

"We feel very good about this recruiting class, not only are they standouts athletically but academically as well," Martin said. "All of these kids have goals of being multiple national champions and to be successful later in life."

Pete Baldwin (157/165 • Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola)
Martin on Baldwin
"He is a very dominant wrestler from the top position and his ability to gain riding time and to pin people will make him a dominant college wrestler."
• Baldwin is ranked No. 32 overall in the nation by InterMat
• Has a career record of 271-20 (197 pins) while his high school record is 166-6 and is a three-time state finalist
• Runner-up at the 2010 Flo Nationals
• Three-time USA Wrestling SE Region Junior Champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman
• 2009 Powerade runner-up and 2010 Super 32 place-winner

Brandon Choate (133/141 • Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain)
Martin on Choate "He is a very scrappy wrestler that has beaten several ranked opponents. He caught our eye when he beat Johnni DiJulius (No. 22 overall). Any time you get a multiple Pennsylvania state AAA place-winner, he's going to be tough to beat in college."
• Has won three-straight Schuylkill League Tournament titles and has a career record of 115-23
• Three-straight third place finishes at the District XI Tournament
• Took third place in the Pennsylvania State Championships last year and seventh as a sophomore
• Earned a seventh place finish at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals

Robert F. Deutsch Jr. (125/133 • Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional)
Martin on Deutsch "He sparked our interest competing at the Beast of the East, ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals and the New Jersey State Tournament the last three years. He has basically beaten everyone at or around his weight class."
• Deutsch is ranked No. 52 overall by InterMat and is the fourth ranked 119-pounder by InterMat
• Has a high school record of 113-12, earning a first, second and third place finish at the New Jersey State Tournament
• Three-time place-winner at the Beast of the East, taking fifth in 2007, sixth in 08 and third in 09
• Earned a seventh place finish at the 2007 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Junior Freestyle Nationals and second in 2008

Chris Mecate (141/149 • Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley)
Martin on Mecate
"He has proved that he can wrestle with the best by winning the Super 32 and 5 Counties. I've known Chris for about 10 years through camps so he will obviously adapt to our system quickly."
• Mecate is ranked No. 46 overall by InterMat and ninth at 141-pounds by TheOpenMat.com
• He is ranked 11th by InterMat at the 135-pound weight class
• Won the Super 32 Tournament, 5 Counties, MLK King of the Mat, El Cajon Invitational, Masters Championships last year as a junior
• Took fifth place in states last year and sixth as a freshman
• Named the 2009-10 Wrestler of the Year by The San Bernardino County Sun

Taylor Moeder (149 • Shawnee, Kan./St. James)
Martin on Moeder "He impressed us from the very beginning and came into his own this summer. His transition to college will be smooth as his club coach is Eric Akin, a former NCAA All-American at Iowa State.
• Moeder is ranked No. 81 overall by InterMat and has a career record of 120-9
• He is ranked ninth at 145-pounds by InterMat and eighth at 141-pounds by TheOpenMat.com
• Has won two-straight Kansas state titles, going 40-1 last year as a junior and took third as a freshman
• Was a double All-American at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Nationals, placing first in Greco-Roman and fourth in Freestyle
• Took fourth at the NHSCA Junior Nationals

"This class fulfills needs for us from 125 all the way through 165," Martin added. "This is the first time we have gotten four top 100 recruits which will give us a top-10 recruiting class."
