Oct. 18, 2007
Charlottesville, Va. - The Old Dominion men's tennis team spent day two of the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional Tennis Championships competing against some of the top doubles teams in the country and the Monarchs held their own, posting a 3-2 mark on the day.
After winning the doubles title at last week's Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational, the Monarchs' top duo of Eidy Igarashi and Alex Seleznev ran into a formidable opponent in the Open Doubles bracket round of 64. Ranked 18th in the country, the North Carolina doubles squad of Lenny Gullan and David Stone edged the Monarchs 8-5 to advance.
William & Mary's 11th ranked tandem of Alex Cojano and Keziel Juneau had an easier time with ODU's Riley King and Matt King, winning 8-3.
After two tough losses to ranked opponents, the Monarchs rebounded behind the play of Yakov Diskin and Alex Funkhouser. The duo went 2-0 on the afternoon with both victories coming against teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). First they defeated North Carolina's team of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney, 8-3, followed by an 8-5 win over Florida State's duo of Chris Cloer and Bobby Deye.
In the only singles match for the Monarchs, Seleznev battled back after dropping the first set to defeat Sandy Franz of USC Upstate, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
