NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University and its student-athletes have raised over $1,200 to be donated to the American Red Cross International Response Fund For Haiti Relief in the "Change Wars For Haiti" competition.

Each athletic team was encouraged to give their loose change during the month of February. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee set a goal of $1,000 between all of the athletic teams, but it was surpassed and $1,259.54 was raised.

"I want to thank each and every student-athlete and athletic staff member who donated to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's "Change Wars for Haiti" competition," said academic advisor Julian Williams. "It was great to see everyone within ODU athletics come together to support this cause and give back to those less fortunate than ourselves."

The competition was a close race between the women's basketball and men's sailing teams, coming down to the final minutes. Over $780 was donated on the last day of the competition with the men's sailing team edging out the competition.

The 14 men's sailors donated $212.89 for a ratio of $15.20 per team member. Women's basketball followed in second with $192.71 raised and a $13.76 ratio. Women's lacrosse raised the most total money ($290.38), but they were third in ratio ($10.75) with 27 team members. Rowing and men's soccer rounded out the top-five.

The men's sailing team and the SAAC Executive Board presented Joey Rothgery, executive director and Fred Rose, fund raiser for the Southeastern Virginia/American Red Cross with a check for the total amount during last evening women's basketball game.
