No. 2 Lady Monarchs Upend Top-Ranked Maryland, 2-1

NORFOLK, Va. (October 15, 2000) -- The second-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team posted a slim 2-1 win over top-ranked Maryland Sunday afternoon at Foreman Field on the campus of Old Dominion University. With the win, Old Dominion improves to 15-1 overall (4-0 CAA) while Maryland falls to 13-2 overall (2-1 ACC).

Honda Award hopeful Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) netted the game winner at the 10:43 mark for Old Dominion. Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half before Marjolijn van der Sommen (Leiden, Netherlands) struck first blood five minutes into the second stanza. Maryland's Megan Kelly (Gaithersburg, Md.) notched the game with a goal at the 15:07 mark before DiGiacomo struck for the win on a corner play. The Lady Monarchs will take to the road this weekend, playing at Richmond (Saturday) and at James Madison (Sunday).
