FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ) recorded four goals, including three in the second period, and added two assists for George Mason as the 20th-ranked Patriots downed visiting Old Dominion 13-9 Friday evening in a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse contest at GMU Stadium. It was the league opener for both teams as Mason improves to 3-3 overall on the year (1-0 CAA) and the Lady Monarchs drop to 3-4 on the season (0-1 CAA). With the victory, Patriot head coach Amy Umbach earns her 50th win in seven seasons as the Mason mentor, and the Patriots snap a four-game losing skid to ODU.

"We started out with a great and determined effort to begin the game," said Umbach. "We had very balanced scoring and played solid defensively throughout the contest. ODU has been a tough team for us to play over the years and this win gives us a lot of confidence entering the CAA portion of our schedule."

Junior attacker Tracy Waterson (Niskayuna, NY) opened the scoring with two salvos to stake 2-0 Mason lead in the first five minutes. The Lady Monarchs Caroline Jacobs got a feed from Suzanne Wosczyna to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 24:45. The two teams exchanged the next three goals as Mason held a 3-2 advantage. Back-to-back markers from freshman Melissa Venturi (Sewell, NJ) and senior defender Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD) lifted the Patriots to a 5-2 margin. Junior attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD) sandwiched in another goal between scores from ODU's Molly Coane and Wosczyna, keeping Mason ahead 6-4 with 9:59 left in the half. The Patriots netted the final markers of the stanza as sophomore attacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA), Hagan and Manas each scored one to lift George Mason to a 9-4 margin at intermission.

The Lady Monarchs' Melody Shotwell began the second period with consecutive goals to trim the Patriot advantage to 9-6 with 23:23 remaining. The Patriots responded with four unanswered goals, including three straight from Hagan, to push the lead to 13-6 at the 13:00 mark. ODU tallied the final three scores resulting in the 13-9 final.

George Mason junior goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD) stopped six shots to become the Patriots' all-time career saves leader with 521, moving ahead of Jolette Solanga (1994-98) who previously held the mark of 518. ODU goalkeeper Michelle Gannon finished with nine saves. The Patriot defensive unit of junior Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD), freshmen Melissa Curry (Edgewater, MD) and Deona Donahue (Shamong, NJ) and sophomore Michele Brady (Fairfax, VA) forced 20 turnovers and helped collect 15 draw controls.

George Mason visits 16th ranked William & Mary Sunday at 12 noon. ODU hosts No. 7 James Madison at 1 p.m.
