Van Der Merwe Heads To Icy Hot/ITA All-American Quarterfinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) needed three sets in his Round of 32 and Round of 16 match-ups, but marched on the quarterfinals of the main draw at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships on Friday afternoon.
Van der Merwe, ranked ninth nationally and seeded fifth in the tournament, will meet ninth seeded Ken Skupski of Lousiania State on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals.
The Monarchs' top singles player opened play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Evghenii Corduneau of Lousiania-Laffayette in the Round of 64. In the next round, the Round of 32, van der Merwe played to a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (0) win over Federico Ueltschi of Montana State. His hard fought 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4, win over Alberto Francis of UCLA put van der Merwe into the quarterfinals.
Van der Merwe and his doubles partner Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) were one of eight doubles team to qualify for the main draw out of the qualifying bracket on Wednesday, but ended play in the Round of 16. In their opening round, the Round of 32, the duo advanced with an 8-1 victory over Alex Schweizer and Gabor Zolton Pelva of Auburn. In the Round of 16, they fell to Ryler DeHeart and GD Jones 9-7 of UCLA. The UCLA duo had upset the tournament's third seed in their opening round match.
