ODU Wrestling Set to Host Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament Sunday

NORFOLK, VA --The Old Dominion wrestling team will play host to the Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament Sunday at the ODU Fieldhouse. Joining the Monarchs will be Colonial Athletic Association rivals George Mason and James Madison, as well as intra-state rivals Virginia, the Apprentice School and VMI.
The Monarchs currently hold a 1-2 record after the Virginia Duals, dropping matches to #22 Edinboro 42-6 and #20 Purdue 37-7, but defeating American 33-9. ODU is currently ranked 8th in the CAA with 14 points and has five ranked wrestlers in the conference: John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) is 5th in the 125 weight class, Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) is 5th at 133, Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA) is 6th at 157, Adam Wright (Dayton, VA) is 3rd at 184 and Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) is 2nd at Heavyweight.
George Mason comes into the tournament ranked 6th in the CAA with 18 points. Leading the Patriots are Rob Becker in the 141weight class and Adrian Austin in the 149 class. Becker is ranked 1st in the CAA at 141, and has national rankings of 9th and 10th in the Amateur Wrestling News and InterMat polls, respectively. Austin, likewise, is first at 149 and is ranked 18th nationally, according to the latest InterMat poll.
James Madison is ranked 10th in the CAA with two points. Todd Schroeder, ranked 6th in the CAA in the 133 class, and Justin Gronlie, 6th at 197, top the Dukes squad. VMI is currently 5th in the Southern Conference, and has an overall record of 0-4. Jason Cox leads the Keydets in the 197 class, and is tied for fifth nationally with three pins. Cox is first in the Southern Conference at 197 and was named Wrestler of the Week for January 5. David Metzler, at 141, has a 17-10 overall record and is ranked second in the conference.
Virginia boasts arguably the best wrestler in the field in Senior Scott Moore. Moore leads the nation with 19 pins in the 141 weight class and is ranked 2nd in the InterMat rankings, with a 27-0 record. Paul Bjorlo in the 149 class is tied for fifth nationally with six pins and Tim Foley, at 165, is ranked 18th in the InterMat rankings. The Cavaliers are coming off consecutive losses at the Virginia Duals, losing to #6 Nebraska 32-10 and dropping their consolation match to Cleveland State 19-18.
The Apprentice School is one of the dominant schools in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association, ranked 3rd in the NWCA Coaches Poll and 2nd in the NWCA points poll with 242 points. Leading the Builders at Heavyweight is Daryl Stackhouse, who is ranked 1st in the NWCA. Eric Lybarger at 165, Ron Vecchione at 157, Jeff Davis at 149 and Jovon Butler at 174 are all ranked 2nd in their respective weight classes in the latest NWCA poll.
First round action of the Virginia State Intercollegiate Tournament begins at 10:00 AM, Quarterfinals start at 12:00 PM, Semifinals start at 2:00 PM and Finals begin at 5:30 PM. All times are approximate. ODU students are admitted free with a valid student ID. Adults can get an all-day-pass for $7.00 or a finals pass for $5.00.
