Baltimore, MD - Lady Monarch attacker Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) exploded for six goals and two assists to lead the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team to a 13-10 win over UMBC, handing the Retrievers their third straight loss. Rodriguez's scoring output is the largest by any Lady Monarch women's lacrosse player this season.

The Lady Monarchs improve to 2-1 on the year while UMBC remains winless at 0-3.

Rodriguez netted the first two goals of the match, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage just 16 minutes into the game. However, UMBC would tie it at two apiece behind the efforts of UMBC sophomore Annie Davis and freshman Kelly Fiorani. At 20:52, sophomore Melody Shotwell would regain the lead for Old Dominion, and would score two more in the first half, helping the Monarchs to a 7-2 halftime advantage.

ODU extended their lead to 13-5 with just seven minutes remaining in the game, but UMBC battled back to score five goals of their own in the last six minutes to pull to within three. Retriever junior Emily Sawyer (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) added the last Retriever goal at 59:59, but UMBC's effort came too late, as Old Dominion came away with the 13-10 win.

Rookie goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made 11 saves in the winning effort. Shotwell poured in four goals, senior co-captain Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) and junior Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) each captured a goal and an assist. Senior attack Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) also added in a goal and is the only Lady Monarch to net at least one goal in all three Lady Monarch contests to date.

The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team will return to action Wednesday against #19 Richmond, its second IWLCA Top 20 opponent of the season.
