Olympic Hopeful Anna Tunnicliffe Returns to Norfolk This Weekend

NORFOLK, VA--Three-time Collegiate Sailing national champion Anna Tunnicliffe (Perrysburg, OH.), the 2005 Quantum Trophy winner as the Women's Collegiate Sailor of the Year returns to Hampton Roads this weekend at a private fundraiser to talk about her successes on the European Regatta circuit as she campaigns to represent the USA in the Laser Radial Class at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

As a student athlete at ODU, Tunnicliffe became the first collegiate sailor to win three straight Singlehanded National Championships. She earned All-American Honors three straight years and was named ODU's Alumni Association's Female Athlete of the Year. Tunnicliffe was also the recipient of the Norfolk Sports Club's Tom Scott Award as the top senior athlete at ODU, and the Portsmouth Sports Club's Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year in Virginia.

A member of the US National sailing squad, Tunnicliffe is ranked number two in the International Sailing Federation World Rankings, and number one in the United States. She was the bronze medalist at the 2005 Laser Radial World Championships and won the Golden Torch Award as the top performing American sailor at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta in February.

Anna will report on her successes during a two-month European training and competition tour in which she raced in major international regattas in Spain, Italy and Austria. In addition to training camps, Tunnicliffe's schedule later this summer includes the Nations Cup in St. Thomas, the World Laser Radial Championships in Los Angeles and a Pre-Olympic regatta in Beijing, China.

Facts: A 2005 graduate from Old Dominion University, Anna has started her journey towards qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Ranked Number Two in the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Rankings, and Number One in the United States, Anna Tunnicliffe was the Bronze Medalist at the 2005 Laser Radial World Championships.
