Monarch Wrestling Falls to No. 7 Missouri and Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 23 Old Dominion University wrestling team lost both of their duals to begin the 2012-13 season o at the Holloway Gymnasium on Saturday as they fall to No. 7 Missouri, 35 - -1, and to Purdue, 29-9.

Facing their future conference member in the MAC next season, Missouri (1-0) had no problem with the Monarchs as all six of the Tigers’ ranked wrestlers won. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Henderson hung with sixth-ranked Brent Haynes at 197 pounds for the entire match but fell short, 1-0, while 184-pound redshirt sophomore Austin Coburn lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Mike Larson, 2-1.

In the battle of ranked opponents, ninth-ranked Nathan McCormick bested No. 19 junior Scott Festejo at 133 pounds, 9-2, while Missouri’s No. 20 Kyle Bradley upended No. 18 redshirt junior John Nicholson, 4-1, at 157 pounds. Old Dominion was deducted a point for team misconduct and fell 35 to -1.

Against host Purdue (1-0), the Monarchs (0-2) got off to a strong start when No. 27 redshirt sophomore Jerome Robinson upset No. 19 Camden Eppert at 125 pounds, 7-2. Robinson moves to 3-0 on the season. The Boilermakers won the ranked battle at 133 pounds as No. 8 Cashe Quiroga doubled up Festejo, 12-6. Purdue boosted the team scored with falls at 141 pounds and 165 pounds. Nicholson won a tight one at 157 pounds over Purdue’s Tommy Churchard, 4-3, to get back on the winning track.

The Boilermakers picked up a win at 149 pounds behind 15th ranked Ivan Lopouchanski while redshirt sophomore heavyweight Matt Tourdot won a thriller over Alex White in sudden victory one, 3-1, as ODU fell to Purdue, 29-9.
