600-WIN CLUB: Lady Monarchs Handle Towson To Give Wendy Larry Her 600th Career Coaching Victory
Jan. 23, 2011
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion head coach Wendy Larry joined the exclusive 600-win club Sunday as the Lady Monarchs rolled past Towson, 71-43, at the Ted Constant Center.
Larry becomes just the 20th Division I coach to reach the historic 600-win plateau and she's the 10th fastest to reach the mark. Now in her 27th season, Larry is the 12th winningest active coach with a career record of 600-229.
Old Dominion (12-6, 6-1 CAA), which is currently in a three-way tie for first in the CAA standings, was led by Alena Voronina's 13 point, six rebound and five steal effort.
Senior Kquanise Byrd chipped in 12 points, while classmate Jasmine Parker contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Tia Lewis registered nine points, six rebounds and two blocks in the win.
Towson (7-11, 1-6 CAA) was paced by Jaleesa Dryver's eight points and seven rebounds. The Tigers, who topped VCU 10 days ago for their lone conference win, have now fallen to ODU twice this season.
Towson took an early 5-3 lead before Old Dominion tallied the next 13 points to jump start a 21-2 Lady Monarch run that gave the home team a 24-7 lead at the 6:36 mark. Old Dominion held Towson to just one field goal during a 12:25 span in the first half and the Lady Monarchs led 35-18 at the intermission.
Old Dominion maintained its 17-point lead midway through the second half until a 17-5 Lady Monarch run put the game away. Byrd had eight points during the spurt, including a fast break three-pointer from the right wing that put ODU up 60-31 with just over six minutes to play.
Old Dominion would lead by as many as 30 late in the contest.
The Lady Monarchs next travel to William & Mary on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip.
