March 23, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team earned its third-straight win, beating No. 16 Old Dominion University, 17-9, on a blustery day at Ludwig Field. The seventh-ranked Terrapins now stand at 4-3 (0-3 ACC) on the season while the Monarchs are now 6-3 (3-1 CAA).
Sophmore Suzanne Wosczyna tied the game 1-1 with 27:46 on the clock, but it would as close as the Lady Monarchs would get as Maryland raced out to a 5-1 lead. For the remainder of the half, the Terps outscored the Monarchs, 6-4, to take an 11-5 lead into the half. Senior Jennifer Heister tallied two goals before the end of the half, one on a free position shot at 23:44 to cut the Terp lead to 5-2 and the other off an assist from Wosczyna with 18:47 to bring to score to 3-7. Danielle Hensil brought ODU within four, 4-8, as she reached the back of the Terrapin net with 11:34 remaining in the first off a pass from Melody Shotwell. Wosczyna added in the Lady Monarchs' final goal of the half and her second of the afternoon with 8:21.
The second half opened with the Terps continuing their scoring run as Annie Collins, Meredith Egan and Coppedge each rattled the cage to run the score to 14-5 with just over 20 minutes left. Wosczyna scored three of ODU's four goals in the second half of play and finished the day with five goals, two assists, and seven points. Heister scored the other Lady Monarch goal with less than two minutes left and closed the day with three goals and an assist for four points.
Maryland has now won 76 straight games against non-conference opponents (its last non-ACC loss came to Loyola in 1997).
Old Dominion returns to action at home on Foreman Field when they face Lafayette tomorrow afternoon.
