Van Der Merwe Heads To Semifinals Of ITA National Indoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Old Dominion's top singles player, senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) charged into the semifinal round of the ITA National Indoor Championship on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Van der Merwe, ranked 9th nationally in the ITA Preseason Poll, picked up an opening round victory over Brian Hung of host Michigan on Thursday. The Kempton Park, South Africa native earned a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 victory.

On Friday, Van der Merwe outlasted Harvard's Martin Wetzel, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in second round action. In the quarterfinals, the Monarch senior used three sets to down Duke's Ludovic Walter, 7-6(10), 3-5, 6-3. Walter was coming off an upset victory against the tournament's top seed, Catalin Gard of Mississippi, earning a 7-5, 6-1, second round win.

Van der Merwe's seminfinal opponent will be Ryler DeHeart of Illinois. DeHeart upset fourth seeded Pedro Rico of Pepperdine in his second round match-up, 7-6(3), 6-4, and defeated Old Dominion CAA rival, Arnaud Lecloerec of Virginia Commonwealth, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5), to reach the semifinals against van der Merwe.

The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation's premier collegiate indoor tennis tournaments for Division I men and women, will be hosted by Michigan at its Varsity Tennis Center for the second straight year. The event features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: champions from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during the past two weeks, the ITA National Small College champions, the champions of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made last week by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
