NORFOLK, VA -- The Terrapins' leading scorer Kelly Coppedge collected six points off three goals and three assists to lead the Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 win over #16 Old Dominion this afternoon on Foreman Field. The Terps remain undefeated on the season improving to 8-0, while the Lady Monarchs have their three game win-streak snapped at three, falling to 5-2 on the year.
Maryland owned a three-goal lead at the half, 7-4. Delia Cox got the game started for the Terps scoring the game's first goal less than three minutes into the contest, but Old Dominion's Erin Lindsey (Audubon, PA) tied the game up just moments later at 1-1. Maryland's Jessica Dorney gave her team the lead for good with 22:47 on the Terp's second goal of the day and an unassisted tally by Acacia Walker pushed the Terp lead to 3-1 with 19:38 remaining.
Old Dominion pulled within one, 3-2, off the first of two Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) goals, with the feed from Lindsey, with 16:39 left in the half. However, it would be another 10 minutes before the Lady Monarchs would reach the back of the Maryland net again. The Terps extended its lead to 6-2 off of goals by Cox, Walker, and Sonia Judd, with Judd's net proving to be the game-winner. Senior Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) and Coane each scored in the closing minutes of the half to bring the Lady Monarchs within two, 6-4, but the Terps struck again with three seconds remaining. Dorney found Judd for her second goal of the afternoon for Maryland to hold the three-goal edge at the intermission.
In the second half though the Terp defense was able to keep Old Dominion away from the net allowing the Lady Monarchs to score only one goal. Leading scorer sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) tallied her lone goal of the day, unassisted, with 21 minutes remaining. Maryland, who at that point owned a 9-5 edge, would go on to score six unanswered goals en route to its eighth win of the year.
In all, Coppedge, Cox, and Walker each had three goals for the Terps. All of Coppedge's goals came in the second half. Dorney and Judd closed the day with two tallies each.
Rookie goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made 13 saves in goal for the Lady Monarchs, while Maryland's Alexis Venechanos made six stops.
Senior co-captain Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) collected six groundballs and eight draws for the Lady Monarchs in the loss, while Kristie Leggio scooped up six groundballs and Delia Cox controlled four draws for the Terps.
The Lady Monarchs return to action hosting CAA rival William & Mary on Tuesday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m. at Foreman Field.
