Women's Basketball Defeats Towson, 66-27
Feb. 3, 2002
Towson, MD-The Old Dominion women's basketball squad had little trouble with CAA foe Towson this afternoon, handling the Tigers 66-27. The Lady Monarchs are now 15-5 and 11-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association, where they have won 130 of their last 131 contests. Towson falls to 1-19, 0-11 CAA.
The Lady Monarchs were dominating from the opening tip-off, racing out to a 22-0 lead before Towson's Kelli Talbot hit a trey for her team at the 9:46 mark. Old Dominion continued to smother the hapless Tigers, limiting them to seven first-half points and setting a new record for fewest points allowed in a half. The Lady Monarchs went into the locker room leading 31-7.
Towson fared slightly better in the second-half, but by then it was too late. With the outcome of the game already decided, every ODU player was able to see action in the contest.
Each Lady Monarch was able to contribute to the rout in some way, and every player was able to register at least two rebounds in another overwhelming win against a CAA foe.
Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali) paced ODU with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes, France) scored 14 points with 8 boards and guard Sharron Francis (W. Lanham Hills, MD) scored a season high 15 points with 5 assists and 4 steals.
Towson was led by Talbot, who scored 11 points and hauled in seven rebounds.
The Lady Monarchs shot 48.9% from the field while Towson managed just 14.6%. ODU also enjoyed another dominating rebounding performance, registering 46 boards to Towson's 26.
Old Dominion finished their four game road swing with four wins and will now host their next four contests against CAA opponents. The Lady Monarchs will kick off their home-stand on February 8, against George Mason.
