Monarchs Defeat UNCW, 84-65, Now Tied For Fourth In CAA

WILMINGTON, NC-- Sophomore forward Frank Hassell scored 19 points and Marsharee Neely added 14 to lead the Monarchs (17-9/10-6) to an 84-65 victory over UNC WIlmington Wednesday night. ODU is now tied for fourth with Drexel and Hofstra.

Five Monarchs scored in double figures tonight. Joining Hassell and Neely were red-shirt freshman Kent Bazemore with 13 and sophomore forward Keyon Carter with 12 points. Every Monarch who played tonight scored and grabbed a rebound.

With the score, 16-15 at the 12:36 mark of the first half, ODU went on an 11-0 tear to take a 27-15 lead wwith 10:34 left in the half. ODU led 46-33 at halftime.

In the second half, the Monarchs started the half off with a 12-0 run to build the lead to 58-33 with 15:43 left in the game.

The Monarchs dominated the board, outrebounding the Seahawks, 40-25. Keyon Carter led all rebounders with eight. Ben Finney and Kent Bazemore hauled down six rebounds each and Frank Hassell had five.

ODU came up with seven steals on the night led by Ben Finney with four.

ODU finished the night shooting a blistering .610 from the floor, while UNCW shot .404. This was the second best shooting performance since the .617 the Monarchs shot against Georgia State.

Hassell hit nine-of-13 from the floor, while Neely was six-for-nine and Finney hit four of five of his shots from the field. Kent Bazemore was five-for six and Carter was five-of 10.

UNCW was led by Chad Tomko with 18 points and Kevon Moore with 11. ODU sweeps the two-game series from the Seahawks.

THe Monarchs are now tied with Drexel and Hofstra for fourth in the CAA with 10-6 league records. VCU is now in first at 12-4, followed by Northeastern and George Mason at 11-5. James Madison drops to seventh at 9-7. The Monarchs return home to host Liberty Saturday morning at 11 am in the annual ESPNU Bracketbusters game.
