ODU's Van Der Merwe Named ITA Region II Player To Watch

NORFOLK, VA -- Old Dominion's NCAA bound men's tennis student-athlete Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) was named the Region II Player to Watch it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

The ITA Player to Watch Award goes to a player who has an outstanding season and is expected to perform at a high level the rest of his or her career. This award's criteria also includes a player's sportsmanship and character.

Van der Merwe is one of among 64 men's tennis singles players selected to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship. Additionally he joins teammate Csanadi as one of 32 doubles teams to reach the tournament.

Ranked 23rd in the country, van der Merwe has compiled a 29-10 overall singles mark. The Monarchs top singles player won the UVA Fall Classic and reached the semifinals of the ICY HOT/ITA Men's All-American Championships. This season he was named the CAA Player of the Year as well as the CAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.

In doubles, van der Merwe and Csanadi, boast an 11-5 record are currently ranked 15th in the country according to the latest ITA Poll. The duo reached the finals of the ITA National Indoor Championships in the fall.

Regional winners are candidates for the national award. National award winners announced May 23 (women) and May 26 (men).
