Monarchs End Run At Wilson/ITA Mideast Tennis Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Monarch tennis team's run at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Mideast Championships held by the University of North Carolina has come to an end. In singles, senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) and sophomore Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) ended tournament play in the Round of 32, while the Monarchs' doubles entry, Van der Merwe and sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) concluded their run in the Round of 16.
Van der Merwe, the tournament's top seed, was upset in the Round of 32 with a three set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, loss to Jonathan Stokke of Duke.
Cancado, who managed to upset the tournament's 17th seed in the Round of 64, fell in the Round of 32 with a three set, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 loss to Stephen Ward from William & Mary.
Van der Merwe and Grover, seeded fifth at the regionals, fell in the Round of 16 with an 8-6 loss to William & Mary's entry of Sean Kelleher and Stephen Ward.
