Evanston, IL-Old Dominion senior Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) took third place at the 2001 Midlands on Sunday, December 30. Midlands, hosted by Northwestern University, is widely considered to be the top wrestling tournament in the country.

Midlands is unique among other tournaments because it is open to both collegiate and top amateur (club) wrestlers.

Rusak, seeded fifth for the tournament, finished with five wins and one loss. Rusak defeated seventh-seeded Ryan Lange of Purdue for the second time this season in the consolation semifinals, then defeated eight-seed Tyler Nixt of Iowa for the third place title.

The senior grappler from Old Dominion had advanced to the semifinals of the championship bracket, but suffered his only setback of the day in a 6-3 loss to top-seeded Joe Williams from the Sunkist wrestling club. Williams went on to claim his eighth straight Midlands title in nine appearances, tying the record held by Olympian Bruce Baumgarter.

Rusak is currently 15-1 on the season. On Tuesday, January 8 Old Dominion will host Missouri at Cox HS in Virginia Beach, VA, where Rusak will be taking on another nationally-ranked foe in Mizzou's John Kopnisky.
