Men's Tennis Ranked In Latest ITA Poll

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team was ranked 59th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released this week. The Monarchs, who begin their dual meet season on January 20th against Norfolk State and George Washington, will face 10 ranked opponents this season.
Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) moved up in the polls to No. 7 after ranking ninth in the preseason poll. This past fall van der Merwe, posted a 9-4 record which included the quarterfinals of the UVA Fall Invite, the quarterfinals of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships, the Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional, and the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships.
Van der Merwe, along with sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.), were featured at No. 38 in the doubles rankings. The Monarch duo finished the fall tournament season with a 5-4 doubles mark ,which included the Round of 16 at the ICY Hot/ITA All-American Championships and the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional.
Among the ranked opponents Old Dominion will face this spring are No. 9 Duke, No. 10 Virginia, No. 14 Va. Commonwealth, No. 24 Harvard, No. 33 Southern Methodist, No. 43 Wake Forest, No. 46 William & Mary, No. 56 Fresno State, No. 57 Brown, and #75 N.C. State.
