Banks' Goal Lifts ODU To 1-0 Win Over UMass In Stihl Classic Opener

NORFOLK, Va.--Old Dominion University's Trevor Banks (Madison, WI.) second half goal lifted the Monarchs (2-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts Friday evening in the first round of the 33rd annual Stihl Soccer Classic. William and Mary defeated Central Florida, 3-1 in the earlier contest. A crowd of 1,846 were in attendance.

After a scoreless first half ODU's game winner was set up after Roberto Sgueglia (Schenedctady, NY.)was fouled. Banks then hit the Direct free kick from about 20 yards out in the upper left corner of the net to put ODU up with 39:08 left in the match.

ODU Sophomore keeper Patrick Brennan (Shreveport, LA.)picked up his second shutout of the season as he had four saves on the evening. Zack Simmons of UMass, the 2007 National Player of the Year had eight saves for the Minutemen. ODU outshot UMass, 15-5 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal. T. J Beaulieu (Apex, NC) , Dylan Montambo (Chesapeake, Va. ) and Nane Joseph (Cameroon) each had three shots.

In the first contest of the evening , William and Marygotgoals from Andrew Hoxie, Nathaniel Baako And Alan Koger in their, 3-1 victory over UCF. UCF's lone goal came 14 minutes into the second half By Kevan George which tied the match at 1-1. Hoxie and Baako then scored for the Tribe (2-0).

W&M outshot UCF, 14-13 on the night. Tribe goalkeeper Andrew mcAdams had six saves as did UCF's Sean Johnson. Both Hoxie and Baako had one goal and one assist each.

Action resumes Sunday when William and Mary plays Massachusetts at 12 noon and ODU takes on Central Florida at 2:30.
