Mello's Quarterfinal Appearance Highlights Men's Tennis Results At Hampton Roads Collegiate Invite

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (October 17, 2004) -- Sophomore Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) and his quarterfinal appearance in the Flight A singles bracket highlighted the Old Dominion men's tennis teams results at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational being held at Huntington Park in Newport News, Virginia this weekend.
Mello opened with two straight three-set victories. He defeated Kenneth Brown of Howard, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, in his Round of 32 match to open play and then proceeded to down Richmond's Matt Cabana, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0, in his Round of 16 contest. Mello's run ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to CAA rival David Emery of James Madison.
Also in the Flight A bracket, sophomore Henrique Cancado fell, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 to Hofstra's top player, Nikola Djordjevic.
In other singles action, sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) fell in the Round of 16 in the Flight B-1 bracket to Jeppy Moss of Richmond (6-3, 7-5), Dominic Manilla (Greenwood, Va.) dropped a Round of 32 decision in the Flight D-1 bracket to John Hayashi of Navy (6-2, 6-0), and Jon Antle (Va. Beach, Va.) fell to Hofstra's Luca Djordjevic (6-1, 6-2) in the Round of 16 of the Flight D-2 bracket.
In Fight A doubles action, Cancado and Mello fell in their Round of 16 match, an 8-5 setback to Brown and Smith of Howard.
The Monarch doubles team of Antle and Manilla reached the quarterfinals of the Flight D doubles bracket. The Old Dominion duo defeated Virginia Wesleyan's Lyon and Popomaronis, 8-2, to open play in the Round of 16. The two then fell in the quarters to American's Frid and Proisy, 8-4.
