Old Dominion Defeats Central Florida, 61-57
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 27)(AP) -- Freddie Bryant hit a 15-footer and sophomore Pierre Greene followed with two free throws in the final 40 seconds to lead Old Dominion to a 61-57 victory Saturday over Central Florida.
Tonight's win gave head coach Jeff Capel his 100th at Old Dominion. He is the fourth Monarch coach to reach that plateau at ODU. The other three are Bud Metheny (198), Paul Webb (196) and Sonny Allen (181).
The Monarchs (2-2) advance to the SoCon Holiday Hoops tournament consolation final Sunday against Furman, a 77-58 winner over South Carolina State on Saturday. The Golden Knights (0-4) will play South Carolina State on Sunday.
Bryant's basket helped Old Dominion push ahead to 55-53. After a miss by Central Florida's D'Quarius Stewart, Greene's free throws made it 59-53.
Stewart came back with a 3-pointer, but Michael Williams advanced the score with two free throws at 3.8 seconds. The Knights got a final free throw from Paul Reed.
Williams scored 15 points to lead the Monarchs. Center Skipper Youngblood added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Stewart netted 14 points and Jason Thornton 12 for the Knights.
The Knights rallied from a 48-40 deficit to pull within one at 52-51 on Roy Leath's rebound shot with 6:58 remaining. After Youngblood's free throw, Central Florida failed to score on three straight possessions, missing three free throws and a field goal attempt.
The Monarchs got breathing room at 55-51 when Wright dropped in a 16-foot baseline shot with 2:47 remaining, but Stewart hit a running one-hander at 2:25 to make it 55-53 and set the stage for Bryant and Greene.
Old Dominion led 32-29 at halftime after leading by as many as 13 in the first half. The Knights outscored the Monarchs 14-6 to close out the period.
