NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion (10-3, 4-1) won its fourth straight conference game and sixth straight at home to remain unbeaten in the first year at the Powhatan Sports Complex as they defeated 20th ranked Hofstra University (9-5, 3-2) in CAA women's lacrosse action today. ODU won 14-9 in a battle between first place teams in the conference and dropped its third nationally ranked opponent of the season.

ODU jumped all over the Pride in the first half, scoring six of the first seven goals and opening up a big lead early. Junior Nicole McMahon led the way, en route to a career day on the field for the Lady Monarchs. McMahon scored two goals in the first four minutes, and three in the first ten to lead ODU to the 6-1 start.

Leading scorer Kelly Kimener had two goals and an assist on one of McMahon's tallies while junior Ashley Kellogg added one goal in the first ten minutes. Hofstra scored three of the last five in the half to cut the lead to four at the break. Kimener and Kellogg added another goal each in the frame.

In the second half, the Pride tried to apply some pressure and got within three a couple of times, but would get no closer as the Lady Monarchs managed to answer each threat with a goal of their own.

Leading scorer for the Pride, Corrine Gandolfi scored a career-high tying seven points in the comeback effort, with three goals and two assists in the final 36:43. However, ODU goalkeeper Sarah Geary was able to turn away the late efforts by Gandolfi and the Hofstra attack.

Offensively, the Lady Monarchs scored three of the last four goals to take the 14-9 lead, all off assists. Rookie Sarah Wright knocked home a pass from senior Jessica Noone, Kimener scored on an assist from rookie Lisa Bernardini and McMahon notched her career-high fourth off an assist from Wright.

Defensively, the Lady Monarchs got a superb effort from senior Brittany Washko, with three caused turnovers and a career-high seven ground balls. Kimener added four caused turnovers and Bernardini led the way on the draw with three.

Hofstra's Katie Hertsch also grabbed three draws and a pair of ground balls to lead the Pride's defense while midfielder K'Leigh Vanaman also had two ground balls. Jackie Pandolf played over 49 minutes in goal, making five saves and allowing nine goals.

The Lady Monarchs win added to a pair of streaks for the season, as the win was the fourth straight in CAA action and the sixth straight at home. ODU has won five of the last six, including three against nationally ranked opponents. The win gave Old Dominion ten for the year, the first season since 2003 with double-digit victories and just the fourth all-time for the Lady Monarchs.

The Lady Monarchs return to the field Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 pm as they host Drexel University. ODU could clinch a spot in the CAA Tournament with a win.
