Srugo, Cancado Advance At Virginia Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Two of Old Dominion three men's tennis entries advanced on the first day of action at the University of Virginia Invitational on Friday. No. 18 Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) each advanced out of the first round of the orange singles bracket.
Srugo, seeded second in the bracket, defeated #81 Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. The win was Srugo's third win over an opponent ranked in the Preseason ITA Poll. He returns to action against Chris Clayton of Harvard tomorrow.
Cancado meanwhile picked up a straight set, 6-4, 6-1, victory over Duke's Joey Atas. He returns to action tomorrow against #34 and fourth seeded Arvid Puramen of Virginia Tech. It will mark the second meeting between the two as they both met in the Round of 16 at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships last weekend at the University of Georgia with Cancado prevailing in a come from behind, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.
Old Dominion's other entry, junior Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) fell in his first round appearance in the blue singles bracket. He fell to #21 and third seeded Martin Sayer of Radford in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Other members of the Monarch tennis team were in action at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach. Results were unavailable at press time.
