Men's Tennis Captures "Elite 8" Invite Title

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team defeated UNC-Wilmington 4-0 to capture the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis "Elite 8" Championship on Saturday at Owl Creek in Virginia Beach. Additionally, the Monarchs picked up another win against Howard playing to a 6-1 victory and improving to 10-10 this season.
In the championship match, the Monarchs captured the doubles point as well as three wins in singles play.
Both Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) allowed their Seahawk opponents just one game. Cancado defeated Alvaro Peteado at No. 2 singles, while Igarashi downed Robert Paul at No. 3 singles both by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Juliano Cirimbelli (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil) was Old Dominion's other singles winner putting away a 6-2, 6-1 win over Benjamin Kotwall.
In doubles, Cirimbelli and Igarashi teamed for an 8-4 win at No.2 doubles versus Rahul Rajkhewa and Taylor Vaughn, while ODU's No. 3 doubles team of Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) and Cancado helped capture the point with an 8-4 win as well defeating Robert Paul and Seth Johnson.
In the day's other match, the Monarchs defeated Howard, 6-1, with ODU earning the win with five singles wins and sweeping through the doubles competition.
Henrique Cancado, Juliano Cirimbelli and Adriano Mello earned straight set wins in their respective matches. Cancado, playing at the No. 1 spot, defeated Brandon Smith, 6-3, 7-6, while Mello edged out Jibade Thomas at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Cirimbelli earned a 6-1, 6-2 No. 5 singles victory over Othman Garma.
Other singles winners for the Monarchs included Eidy Igarashi with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles against Kenneth Brown and Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) ahead in his No. 4 singles match having captured the first game, 6-2, before the match was retired.
The doubles competition belonged to the Monarchs. Izak van der Merwe and Dom Manilla played to an 8-7 win over Howard's Jibade Thomas and Faron Carter, 8-7, at No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, Cancado and Souze teamed for an 8-4 win against Kenneth Brown and Brandson Smith at No. 2 doubles, and Cirimbelli and Igarashi defeated Othman Garma and Neilabh Avasthi, 8-6.
The Monarchs will return to action on Sunday, April 3rd against CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth.
