March 28, 2005
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Junior Sarah Lautenbach (West Chester, Pa.) tallied her first career goal to tie Monday's game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 6-6 and spark the rally which led to the Lady Monarchs' 9-8 victory. The win snapped ODU's two-game losing streak as the Lady Monarchs upped their record to 3-3 overall.
The Scarlet Knights struck first on the soggy Rutgers Stadium Complex turf moments into the start of the game, but moments later the Lady Monarchs went ahead 2-1 from goals by sophomores Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.) and Colleen Carver (Catonsville, Md.). Old Dominion held onto the lead for five minutes before Rutgers netted four answered goals to regain the advantage and hold a 5-3 edge with 10:30 left in the first half. The Lady Monarchs climbed to within one on back-to-back unassisted goals by ODU leading scorer Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.), but Rutgers' Lindsay Rising found the back of the Lady Monarch net with just 39 seconds remaining to give the Scarlet Knights a 6-4 lead at the half.
The second half saw the Lady Monarchs take control early, holding Rutgers scorless through nearly the first 20 minutes of the second stanza while going on to score four answered tallies. Sophomore Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) started the scoring barrage less than two minutes into the half and then Lautenbach tied the game at 6-6 with 23:58 remaining. Stanwick and Jacobs scored again for the Lady Monarchs as Old Dominion held onto a two-goal lead, 8-6, with 17:58 left in the game.
The Scarlet Knights would not go away though. Katie Batiuk stopped the Rutgers second-half drought at the 10:50 mark to pull the Scarlet Knights to within one, 8-7. Jacobs then connected on what would be here fourth and final goal of the afternoon to bump the ODU lead back to two, 9-7, with 2:13 left. Again, the Rutgers offense struck again with a mere 1:05 left on the clock to pull once again within one, 9-8. However on the ensuing draw control, ODU's Veneziale, ranked 15th in the country in draw controls per game, collected the ball and kept the Scarlet Knights from another scoring opportunity.
Jacobs led all scorers on the soggy afternoon with four goals and two assists finishing the game with six points. Stanwick was the other Lady Monarch multiple scorer with two.
Veneziale was the game's lead in draws with four, while senior Cassandra Connor (Crozet, Va.) and junior Tameka Davis (Washington, D.C.) managed to scoop up two groundballs apiece.
In goal, junior Michelle Gannon (Delmar, Md.) began the game, playing 23:46 mintues and allowing five goals. Rookie Sara Larson (Sylvan Lake, Mich.) completed the final 36:14 of the game, making five total saves. Rutgers' Lyndsey Feldman allowed all nine ODU goals and made four saves in the loss.
