VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (November 12) -- Brian Hinkey's (Stow, OH/Western Branch) penalty kick conversion at the 57:24 mark served as the match's lone score, allowing #5-seeded William & Mary to upset top-seeded and #13-ranked Old Dominion, 1-0, in a CAA Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

The decisive score was set up after ODU was whistled for a penalty when Anders Haugom (Gjovik, Norway) took down Hinkey in the box after receiving a pass from Doug Henry (Shorewood, Wi./Shorewood). On the penalty kick, Second Team All-CAA keeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, Md./Rockville) anticipated the shot going to his right, but the 1999 All-CAA midfielder went left and snuck the ball into the back of the net inside the right post.

I thought both teams had their chances tonight, said W&M head coach Al Albert. We had a few better opportunities and Brian (Hinkey) was able to convert one.

1999 All-CAA goalkeeper Adin Brown (Pleasant Hill, Ca./Del La Salle) collected six saves for the 13-6-3 Tribe, while posting his second consecutive tournament shutout. With the blanking, Brown recorded his league-leading eighth shutout of the season and the 36th of his career.

Boasting a CAA-low 0.81 goals against average, Connelly was peppered with 12 shots and recorded three saves for the Monarchs, who have their eyes set on an NCAA Tournament at- large bid with a 15-4-0 record.

We're on the bubble, noted ODU head coach Alan Dawson while discussing his team's chances of earning an at-large bid. I think if we had won tonight we would have been a lock to get in.

On Sunday at 1:30pm, the Tribe will make its first CAA Tournament championship game appearance since 1996. W&M will face #2-seed Virginia Commonwealth, a 4-3 overtime winner vs. Richmond, for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
