Women's Soccer Defeats East Carolina At CAA Tournament
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Nov. 3) - Senior defender Kristen Murray (Wappingers Falls, NY) and sophomore forward Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) each scored goals to lift the sixth-seeded Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (10-8-0) to a 2-0 victory over third-seeded East Carolina (11-5-1) in quarterfinal action of the women's CAA tournament at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The win marks the first post-season victory for the Lady Monarchs since 1995.
Murray opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on a 30 yard blast into the left center part of the net, over ECU keeper Amy Horton's head. The Lady Monarchs held the 1-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, both teams had several scoring chances but Horton came up with five saves and ODU net-minder Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) made two to keep the score 1-0 through 89 minutes of play. Finally, with just 43 seconds remaining, McGovern headed a feed from sophomore forward Jen Henley (Chalftont, PA) into the goal from five yards out to seal the 2-0 win for the Lady Monarchs.
Dedmond and starting keeper Alison Kinsler (Virginia Beach, VA) combined for the Lady Monarchs seventh shutout victory of the season. The win also avenges Old Dominion's early season loss to the Lady Pirates down in Greenville, NC.
The Lady Monarchs will take on seventh-seeded Richmond (12-8-1) on Friday night at 7:30 pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The Lady Spiders defeated #2 James Madison earlier tonight to advance to the semi-final round for the third year in a row. Old Dominion defeated Richmond, 3-2, in regular season play this year to extend its unbeaten streak to six games all-time versus UR.
