Tanner to Play in Umbro Select College All-Star Game
This marks the fifth year that Umbro, the international soccer company, will put the spotlight on the top men and women college seniors who have finished their collegiate careers. It also gives the players the opportunity to impress a wide array of professional coaches and team scouts who will be at the event.
Tanner, who recently became just the fourth Monarch ever to earn All America honors, is one of 49 All Americans total among 80 men's and women's players. He will be joined on the East squad by VCU forward Kevin Jeffrey and William and Mary goalkeeper Adin Brown, also All Americans.
The Monarch forward recorded one of the most outstanding seasons in ODU soccer history in 1999, scoring 20 goals and lending four assists for 44 points to help lead his team to a 15-4-0 record, #13 national ranking, and a CAA regular-season title. He earned CAA Player of the Year honors, as well as All CAA first team, All South Atlantic first team, Va.SID All State first team and Division I NSCAA All America third team honors.
The East-West men's game will be played Saturday, Feb. 5 at 6 pm. That contest will be followed by a special match featuring the hometown Miami Fusion versus the United States U-23 National Team, which includes players who are candidates for the 2000 Olympic soccer team. The East-West women's game will be Sunday at 4:30 pm, following a nationally televised international match between the US Women's National Team and the national team from Norway at 2 pm (ESPN).
Other events taking place over the Umbro Select weekend include a player banquet, a Major League Soccer (MLS) player combine and the MLS (Division I) and A-League (Division II) professional player drafts.
