NORFOLK, VA--Sophomore forward Janna Pearson (Haymarket, VA.) scored with 4:53 left in the first overtime to give the Lady Monarchs (8-0) of Old Dominion University a 2-1 victory over the Lady Flames of Liberty (3-5) Monday night.
The two teams played 86-plus minutes of scoreless soccer until Mandee Wheelock fed Amy Oberlin to give Liberty a 1-0 lead. A little over a minute later with 1:51 left, Heather Vaughan (Virginia Beach, VA.) got a rebound off Shavon Knight's missed header to tie the match and send it into overtime.
The winning goal came as Knight passed to Pearson as she broke toward the net. It was Knights team leading fifth assists of the season and team leading 21st point. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Tupman (Virginia Beach, Va.) had seven saves on the evening for ODU while Liberty keeper Katherine Neff had three saves.
Liberty's goal was only the second score of the season by an ODU opponent. The eight straight wins break's last year's seven game winning streak. The Lady Monarchs open up CAA play at Delaware Friday night. Liberty returns to action of Sept. 24th at Coastal Carolina.
