Lady Monarchs Subdue UNC-Wilmington, 2-0

Norfolk, VA-The Old Dominion University women's soccer team picked up their first CAA win of the season this afternoon with a 2-0 triumph over UNC-Wilmington. The Lady Monarchs are now 2-2, 1-0 CAA. The Seahawks fall to 1-3, 0-2 CAA.

Old Dominion got on the board first midway through the first half when Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) put in her own rebound of a shot off of UNCW goalie Meghan Fitzsimmons. Senior midfielder Anna Gruzalski (Oak Ridge, TN) delivered the final score of the game in the second half when she sent a perfectly placed ball past Fitzsimmons into the upper-right hand corner of the net.

ODU goalies Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) and Alison Kinsler (Va. Beach, VA) collected two saves in the shared shutout. Wilmington's Fitzsimmons racked up eight saves in the losing effort.

The Lady Monarchs held a 15-5 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corners.

Old Dominion will hit the road to take on Loyola College and Towson University next weekend. The Lady Monarchs next home match will be September 19 against CAA foe VCU.
